Art Digest: Sourcing Tips, Favorite Galleries, and More

violet marsh interiors favorite art galleries

Many don’t know that my love for art stems beyond a casual hobby. I received a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts Administration from a small college in Boston and when I learned about this unusual major that combines art history, fine art and business, my world lit up with so many possibilities. It seemed to me at the time, a practical pursuit of a life in the arts. In my first role, I worked as a gallery assistant at Pucker Gallery on Newbury Street and later worked as a gallery assistant, at Yossi Milo Gallery in New York. I thought I had made it! I had been following the artists at Yossi’s gallery in the late 90’s early aughts for years and was thrilled to have an opportunity to work with them in real life. Now that I’m in an interior design role, I’m proud to bring this unique experience and expertise to my clients and projects.

The experience of studying art and visiting galleries has also afforded me this tidbit: it can be intimidating to walk into a gallery to source art for your home or an interior design project. My advice would be to keep in mind that they are trying to connect with new audiences and support their artists. A relationship with a gallery is something that builds slowly over time. Put in the time and effort to learn about the artists that interest you, their work, how it progresses, and so on. Galleries always have interesting information to share about how the work is made and how the artist thinks of their own work, so take advantage of it - be curious and explore!

If you’re looking for new additions to your art collection or would like to find new places to source special pieces for your interior design project, I’ve listed my favorite sources below. Enjoy!

Tappan Collective

Tappan Collective has an amazing collection of affordable art. I particularly love the photography by Danny Scott Lane and Katie Burdon.

Uprise Art

Uprise Art is known for their modern originals at a moderate price point. I love the paintings of Sarah Ingraham.

Soicher Marin

Soicher Marin has lots of gorgeous oversized prints. The prints by Paule Marrot are just amazing. They also have a lot of older fashion photography by Slim Aarons too.

SCAD Art Sales

SCAD Art Sales represents the works of Savannah College of Art and Design. My favorites are Angela Burson and Jennifer Small.

Open Studios

Open Studios occur in your city or town. When I lived in Boston, I looked forward to going to these every year. You can go into artist’s studios, meet them, and get to see what they are working on.

Space Gallery St. Barth

Space Gallery St Barth has two of my favorite artists - Christian Johnson and Riz Rizz Rizz.

Jackson Fine Art

If you’re an Atlanta local, I love Jackson Fine Art for photography. There are too many that I love at this gallery to list, but here are a few favorites: Julie Blackmon, Bruce Davidson, Cig Harvey, Karen Knorr, Bastiaan Woudt, and Mária Švarbová.

Anne Irwin Fine Art

Anne Irwin Fine Art is a Miami Circle gallery in Atlanta. My favorites here are Marissa Voytenko, Lindsay Porter and, Jen Matthews.

Thomas Deans Fine Art

Another Atlanta Miami Circle gallery, I can’t get enough of Jeni Stallings’ work.

Although I love art and putting together guides on where to source it, my main role is to bring modern, luxury interior design to homes and spaces in Atlanta, Maine, New Hampshire, and beyond.
