Elevated Transitional Kitchen & Main Floor Refresh in Atlanta
Welcome to our latest design reveal. This project began with a simple request: a main floor refresh. We took a stately Morningside home and gave it a fresh, elevated look, from exterior to interior.
Starting with the exterior, we picked a soft neutral color to blend with the limestone and wow does it look better! We updated the door hardware but I didn’t get a picture. I am an interior designer, after all. Every detail truly matters.
The front entryway is dramatic at two levels. There were faux castle-like walls and an ornate, oversized chandelier that had outlived its charm.
A lot is transformed with paint alone, am I right? We also restyled and hung their existing art and added a stair runner that really grounds the space. What a shame I didn’t get a photo of the new chandelier. It’s oversized and perfect for the space. I love the existing oversized black entry table. We restyled it to make it pop and now the room is glowing.
To the left of the entry is a spacious formal living and dining area. This large, airy space featured classical furniture with great bones, but it needed a bit of reimagining. We began by rearranging the existing furniture pieces for better flow and balance and added new rugs which brought in texture and color. The fresh deep blue green paint color on the walls adds warmth and sophistication.
We repurposed the client’s collection of accessories and lamps but gave them new life with a little re-styling. A new coffee table and a few accent pieces rounded out the design, adding the right touches that seamlessly blen with their timeless aesthetic.
And voila! Doesn’t the creamy upholstery pop so nicely wrapped in the dark paint color? Adding this tone on the walls also makes the black fireplace less contrasty. We picked the rug first and then pulled the wall color from the rug and everything works beautifully together. The room feels more inviting and more alive.
I love “shopping” in my client’s homes. Look at the darling palm tree buffet lamps I found in a secondary bedroom below. I showcased them on the dining room sideboard. They need to be seen.
The rust pillows add contrast and pop. The coffee table has two layers so we could display books which add personal interest and texture. The lines of the table are what I would call updated traditional (people say transitional), and it’s the perfect size for the sofa and chairs. The original one was too small— not quite the right scale.
The causal family room on the other side of the house needed some love. We added a new sofa, a larger rug, updated window treatments and some styling. We worked around a few pieces they had and loved like the coffee table.
After scouring the earth, we found an oversized blue sectional.. and guess what!? The ends recline! It’s called motion furniture. We added a much bigger rug to ground the furniture and I added a console table to this small wall with some art they recently acquired.
The wall color is a beautiful gray green and we reworked the drapery to fit over the new bi-fold doors. I didn’t get a picture of the new doors (or the chandelier we added! rats!) but we took out the demilune windows here and in the sunroom which we will talk about next.
This is such a lovely room. It’s a few steps down off of the kitchen and connects to the family room (seen above) and out onto the back yard and gorgeous pool area. The daylight just pours in!
We were working with some good furniture pieces. We lightened the paint color, added sheer drapery to soften the sunlight and add privacy, sourced a larger, casual rug to contain the swivel chairs, and a larger, low coffee table that has a marble top. Something about this table with the gold legs felt very fresh and “garden-y” to me. What a lovely place to enjoy your morning coffee and get ready for the day.
The pale wood cabinet below housed a lot of stereo equipment so we didn’t want to move it but it looks so pretty in the new surroundings.
Across the room we added an extra long side board in the same wood tone. This will be used for a bar and offers a ton of storage and fits the space p-e-r-f-e-c-t-l-y! I love when that happens!! It also has great texture on the front.
I don’t think I have met a ginger jar that I haven’t liked.
Saving the best for last… the new and improved kitchen! This is the hub of any home and it is original to the home from the nineties. They repainted it at one point.
Ok… so take this all in in the before image above. We made a lot of changes. That is what we do! The entire kitchen was reconfigured. We made the stove wall the focal point and elongated it down to the back wall of windows. We centered and squared off the island (and integrated the trash in the island next to the sink.) We relocated the microwave within the cabinetry and added a gorgeous, classical range hood. We brought the cabinets up to the ceiling to fill this oversized room.
We created crown molding to match the existing molding around the main level. That is what custom design can do for you. And We swapped out the overhead lighting at the table and selected something light and airy.
The stone is a polished Taj Mahal quartzite with an ogee edge. We used polished nickel hardware which is classic and will age well. The fridge and the freezer columns are integrated/paneled and flank the stove wall for symmetry. We always added under counter lighting.
Always with the angles (island) with anything built in the nineties!
Squaring things off and adding symmetry feels calming and grounding.
The touch of dark gray blue color on the island adds gentle contrast.
Behold the new pantry wall! Scroll up to see the closet that was there originally.
We added an appliance garage, a microwave drawer and two oversized pantry cabinets with roll out shelves and drawers.
It’s light and airy and packed with functionality!
The end.
