2024 Interior Design Trends Violet Marsh Interiors is Loving

Before a year even turns over to the next, publications like Architectural Digest and House Beautiful have already released their interior design trend predictions for the upcoming year. Typically, these predictions are based on what’s hot in another creative industry, (a.k.a. colors, tailoring, and fabrics in fashion) and what elements they see bubbling up again and again throughout the year. (By the way, trend spotting while I am visiting a new place is always a fun game I like to play.)

With interior design, new trends can offer a novel and refreshing take. There can be a lot of copycatting and rinse and repeat aesthetics happening via the Internet, so it’s inspiring to see what’s new. When working on spaces for my clients, we incorporate trends to varying degrees based on what the client likes and wants. Every designer claims to create “timeless designs” but I am not buying it. Why shouldn’t design be a time capsule for where you are in this moment in time, evolving and expanding as you age and experience life? Who wants things to be static and preserved. Not me. Express your now.

The trends I am really loving and excited by are outlined below. Having taken these in, I’ve noticed many of them can easily overlap. Some of the spaces considered ‘quiet luxury’ could also be described as earthy or modern. What is ‘homey and cozy’ can also be described as classical. This is a reminder that trends come and go, but one thing remains true: there are no longer boxes where everything fits neatly into one specific category.

With that, let’s get into the 2024 interior design trends we’re loving here at Violet Marsh Interiors:

Quiet Luxury

I love this trend because it’s understated, minimalist, and sophisticated. The idea is that every material you bring into a space is luxurious and special. Think velvet walls, plaster ceilings, and mohair upholstered beds. Each element is exquisitely divine and refined and it’s all about the edit. Rooms are edited down to their essence, or their essentials, while still offering the utmost comfort and beauty. Typically the colors are desaturated or neutral and there is an element of natural wood and highly polished earthiness to balance the austerity.

Tone-on-Tone Color Saturation

Color really influences our mood and there is no better way to experience this than with a saturated room palette. I love this all in commitment to one specific color. Accent walls? They don’t exist here! We are drenching every plane in gorgeous color and the light bounces and changes all day long to create these temples of color. Our frequencies are changed by experiencing color in this way and it’s deeply inspiring.

Cozy with Traditional Touches

Nurturing the self has never been more important in our post pandemic world and we’re seeing interiors reflect this. Spaces are getting divided, we’re adding doors for privacy, and designating areas in our homes, purposefully. I love smaller (or human) scale architecture and rooms and I am so happy about this trend. There is a touch of rustic meets classicalism here and the colors are muted with materials that have patina. We see small print wall covering and textiles with the goal of layering in warmth, comfort, and that feeling of being tucked in.

Maximalism and Personality

Just like everything post Internet age, aesthetics in interior design are continually being fractured, divided, stretched, reconsidered, and created in a multitude of personal and unique ways. Gone are the days of being simply traditional or modern in our decorating pursuits. We have infinite options (access to ideas) and ways of self expression. We are seeing an explosion of creativity in pairing deeply personal and collected items along with interesting and bold textiles in unconventional color combinations. This trend is all about using space to express yourself and what feels good to you. It’s a visual feast for the senses.
