Creating a Dark and Moody Bedroom: Atlanta Interior Design
If you scroll through the Violet Marsh Interiors blog or peruse our project portfolio, you’d see we love dark, moody bedrooms. Take, for instance, our Jewel Tone Virginia Highlands Primary Bedroom and Reimagined Atlanta Principal Suite. There’s an undeniable allure and romance to a bedroom with a darker ambiance that makes the space feel more intimate, more like a retreat or an escape. Plus, there’s evidence suggesting that sleeping in darker-toned rooms can lead to better rest— something we could all benefit from.
There is an art to crafting such a space, though. It begins with selecting a color palette that sets the mood just right, followed by layering in sumptuous textures to add depth and warmth.
Color Drench the Room
Whether you’re going with paint or wallpaper on the walls, the same tip applies - color drench the room. From the walls to the ceiling to the trim. We lean towards colors that are rich and warm when designing a moody bedroom. In the Reimagined Principal Suite, we took the color from the walls to the vaulted ceiling. The dark wood slat wall complements the beams and makes the space feel extra moody.

Select Statement-Making Furniture
Creating a moody space means making a statement and furniture is a great way to do that. Depending on the color and texture, a large-scale headboard or uniquely shaped chair can go a long way in establishing a mood. In the Morningside New Build Primary Bedroom, we selected a tall, dark and velvety upholstered headboard.

Layer Up with Cozy, Luxurious Textiles
From the floor up, we like to mix in layers of textiles to create a more luxurious feeling in a bedroom. Buttery, organic fabrics go a long way in upping the mood factor of a room. Velvet is great for drapes, seating, bedding or the headboard, while leather also feels right at home on a chair or in the hardware. In the Reimagined Principal Suite, we selected a plush wall to wall carpet which is so soft and cozy on bare feet and as you can see, the layers of fabrics and textures just continue up from there. If you have hardwood floors, it’s important to select a plush, comfy rug to anchor your room’s design and create the cozy feeling that a moody bedroom should have.

Add Drama with Lighting
We can’t stress enough how much of an impact lighting has on a space. Both the light fixtures and the lighting itself create depth, height, interest, and can draw attention to your most impressive focal points. If it’s possible, in a bedroom we like the formula of a ceiling light and wall sconces or lamps on either side of the bed then candles scattered about for ambiance. The lighting of a moody bedroom should be soft (we suggest dimmers) and should come from a few places around the room, not just the ceiling. The wall sconces in our Luxe Atlanta Condo Primary Bedroom are so fun.
