Currently Inspired by: Desert Modernism in Palm Springs

I love traveling and the excitement of being in a new place. It fuels my creative and professional life and I find it endlessly inspiring. Last Winter, I visited Palm Springs, CA and wow— what a treat! As a mecca for modernism and mid-century architecture, this desert city was a stark contrast to what I usually see living in Atlanta.

When I think back to the trip, what inspired me the most was the minimalism. The smaller (human) scale of the ranch homes, straight lines, and geometric patterns are particularly striking against the mountain backdrop and tall skinny palms that can be seen wherever you turn. Fun fact: Palm Springs has one of the largest concentrations of preserved mid-century modern architecture in the world.

It was a welcome surprise to see the glorious pops of color, too. In Atlanta, I think it is safe to say you would not see see a white house with a bright pink door, but in Palm Springs, it works. The pops of color are plentiful as they speak to the area’s lively history as a playground for the world’s biggest stars. There is something about the quality of light in California — it’s clear and vivid in a way that is very distinct from other parts of the world. The light often looks pink and glowing. In Atlanta the light is more murky and because there is so much green from the trees all around this green is mixed in, reflected in, and bounced off of all of the structures.

The Palm Springs interiors are just as eye-catching as the exteriors. The lobby at the Holiday House, a boutique hotel designed by Mark Sikes, is a great representation of the area’s aesthetic. The space features a blue patterned wallcovering on the ceilings and walls with the matching fabric on the wrap-around sectional sofa.  It feels very cocoon-like and inspiring with colorful art and collection of art books.

A few more interiors that are so gorgeous they deserve to be shared. Notice how vibrant and interesting all of these spaces are. Between the colors, unique shapes, and pattern play, the eye candy is endless. If you’re a mid-century modern guru, you must add Palm Springs to your travel bucket list!

Although I love to share my travels and where I find inspiration, my main role is to bring modern, luxury interior design to homes and spaces in Atlanta, Maine, New Hampshire, and beyond.
