Custom Furnishings: What an Interior Designer Can Do for You

Interior designers have to wear many hats and have experience in a wide range of skills. They are materials masters, project managers, color experts, psychologists, (sometimes psychics!) space planners, purchasing agents, business managers, lighting designers, mood makers and more.

They are expected to be highly creative, patient, original, practical and solutions oriented all within budget and under deadline. They are only as strong and as competent as their vendor partners. They have a rolodex of vendors and trades people to make the dream room you have in your head even better, and come alive. From the outside, the interior design profession looks glamorous, but those of us who do this for a living know well that it is a ton of effort and serious responsibility. The beautiful images at the end of a project sure make it all worth it.

Vet your interior designer well, my friends, because we each have different strengths and growth opportunities. You want to have a positive and productive relationship from day one through the very end of your project.

Often, achieving a final, polished look requires custom or bespoke pieces of furniture. At Violet Marsh Interiors, we love custom furniture. We create the perfect scale and use gorgeous fabrics to achieve just the right look. Ever find a piece of furniture you love but it is the wrong size or not quite the right color?

Of course you have! It’s happens all of the time. Shopping and hoping you find the exact right piece can take a serious amount of time with unfulfilling and often mixed results.

Custom Furniture Scaled to Fit Your Space

One of the biggest benefits of custom furniture is having the ability to select the right scale to fit your space. For instance, the overly large living room in which even the largest standard sized sofa looks entirely too small. I run into it all the time. It’s very common with rugs too. People are conditioned to think they can only get a rug in a standard size, but I am here to tell you, to help you, procure a custom sized rug that works for your space.

When working with an interior designer, you won’t have to settle for furniture pieces that ‘almost’ work or are good enough. You will get quality pieces that work and that will withstand the test of time.

Custom Furniture with Custom Materials

This is where you can really start dreaming. With custom furniture, we have the ability to select all upholstery and finishing details— fabric material and color, wood stain, foot style, etc. We tap into our extensive resources to present material and style options that you haven’t seen yet.

At our recently completed Jewel Tone Virginia Highlands Primary Bedroom project, we were intentional about the scale of the custom bench that sits at the foot of the bed, but also the fabric material. We chose a textural neutral fabric to bring contrast to the space while the scale of the bench fits at the foot and adds more softness to the bedroom.

Custom Furniture that is Completely Original

Perhaps one of the most exciting things about custom furniture is that the piece is completely original and no one else will have it. When furniture is created for a specific space and to serve a specific purpose, it isn’t something anyone will find on a showroom floor. It is quite literally created just for you and the room.

A great example in the boy’s room we designed at our mid-century modern project in midtown Atlanta (pictured below left). We created an arched headboard to add a sense of youthful playfulness to the room and took it a step further with custom pillows and drapery. The primary bedroom at our Colorful Buckhead Condo Transformation followed a similar suit as we custom designed a deep green felt headboard in a modern cocoon-like shape along with an oversized custom lumbar pillow.

Work with Violet Marsh Interiors to get access to exclusive vendors and makers. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
